The site experienced a few name changes after being closed down from various spaces; now and again the name showed up as "123Movies", and different occasions as "123movies". The first name, and URL, was 123movies.to, which changed to different areas including 123movies.is prior to diverting to gomovies.to and later gomovies.is.[11] It was changed to gostream.is, and afterward to memovies.to, prior to changing to 123movieshub.to/is and staying there until closure.

In October 2016, the MPAA recorded 123Movies in its Online Notorious Markets review to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), expressing that: "The website has a worldwide Alexa rank of 559 and a nearby position of 386 in the U.S. 123movies.to had 9.26 million overall special guests in August 2016 as per SimilarWeb information". In October 2016, Business Insider announced that 123movies.to was the "most-utilized privateer site" in the United Kingdom. 

123Movies included HD, HD-RIP, Blu-beam and camera characteristics of movies. The video hosters and players it utilized included Openload, Streamango, and MyCloud. During its reality and closure period, the site was covered by TorrentFreak with respect to its highlights, uptime/personal time, closure, and explanations behind closure. 

In December 2017, the designers of 123movies dispatched another streaming website committed to anime, named AnimeHub.to, which stayed online for quite a long time after 123Movies' closure

In March 2017, TorrentFreak detailed that the US diplomat to Vietnam, Ted Osius, had been in talks with the neighborhood Minister of Information and Communications, Truong Minh Tuan, about closing down illicit video web based locales working from Vietnam, and recorded 123movies as one explicit webpage. 

In October 2017, the MPAA recorded 123Movies (and GoStream.is) in its Online Notorious Markets outline to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, expressing that while the website was in fact facilitated from Ukraine that: "The webpage finds a way to shroud the personality of the administrator, including utilizing Cloudflare, yet there is solid motivation to accept the administrator is as yet in Vietnam; content is transferred utilizing cyberlockers from various email accounts starting from Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy". 

In March 2018, the MPAA said that the site was the "most mainstream unlawful site on the planet", expressed it was worked from Vietnam and assessed that it got 98 million guests for each month. On 19 March 2018, a note on the site's landing page declared its closure, and asked clients to "regard producers by paying for films and TV-shows".
